GUINEA-BISSAU, The United States today formally congratulated President-elect Joao Bernardo ’Nino’ Vieira for his election victory and urged all parties of the African State of Guinea Bissau to accept the results of the July 24 vote, disputed by the opposition. In a statement, US State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, underlined that the presidential election, with 52% of votes obtained by ’Nino’ Vieira, “was confirmed on August 19 by the Supreme Court of Guinea Bissau”. For this reason, stated Sean McCormack, “We, along with the United Nations, Economic Community of West African States, and others in the international community, call on all parties to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court so that Guinea Bissau can move forward to a more peaceful and prosperous future”. The spokesman concluded that the United States desires to work with President elect Vieira and his government in the common interests of the two nations. [BO]
