Evariste Ndikumana is a member of the Batwa community from Burundi, in central Africa. With a population of 80,000, the Batwa are the third largest ethnic community in Burundi. Evariste recently represented the Batwa in a fellowship training program for French-speaking indigenous peoples organized by the UN Human Rights office in Geneva.

OLAF PUBLISHES ITS ACTIVITY REPORT

A crumbling bridge built with EU money but substandard materials, plagiarism in an EU research project, tomato importers evading customs duties, a retired official trying to increase his pension by illegal means: these are only four examples demonstrating the large variety of cases in which the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) intervened in 2007. OLAF presented today in Brussels its new Annual Activity Report which illustrates its work inside and outside the EU in 15 case studies and numerous statistical tables. At the end of 2007, OLAF was investigating a total of 408 cases.

Un pont construit à l’aide de fonds européens qui se désagrège à cause de l’utilisation de matériaux ne répondant pas aux normes, un projet de recherche européen qui est entaché de plagiat, des importateurs de tomates qui éludent les droits de douane, un fonctionnaire retraité qui tente d'augmenter sa pension par des moyens illégaux: ce ne sont là que quatre exemples illustrant la grande variété de cas traités par l’Office européen de lutte antifraude (OLAF) en 2007. l’OLAF a présenté aujourd'hui à Bruxelles son nouveau rapport annuel d'activité, décrivant à l’aide de 15 études de cas et de nombreux tableaux statistiques les actions menées à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur de l’UE. Fin 2007, l’OLAF enquêtait sur 408 cas au total.

Member States endorse Commission proposal to reduce standby electricity consumption

During yesterday's meeting of the Ecodesign Regulatory Committee, EU Member States endorsed the Commission's proposal for a regulation reducing standby energy consumption of household and office products. The regulation lays down energy efficiency requirements for all products sold in Europe, thus cutting the EU's standby electricity consumption by almost 75% by 2020.
